SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — It was designed almost 90 years ago, it’s silver, it makes a lot of noise, it’s one of the few left of it’s kind, and it helped win World War II.
It’s the B-17 bomber named Sentimental Journey and its at the Sioux Falls airport this weekend.
The Arizona Wing of the Commemorative Air Force flew the B-17 in earlier this week.
Sioux Falls also has a CAF unit, the Joe Foss Squadron, which meets monthly.
You can buy group and individual rides and tours of the aircraft.
It’s located at the Maverick Service Center on the northeast side of Joe Foss Field.
The aircraft is the only surviving flying B-17 out of the 13,000 made during World War II. 8,000 were lost in combat.
The plane has 13 machine guns! Imagine being a German Luftwaffe fighter pilot facing just one aircraft, let alone several squadrons in a box formation!
“The Sentimental Journey” has been featured in a number of films, including “12 O’Clock High,” “Tora! Tora! Tora!”, “Memphis Belle,” and “Test Pilot.”
