WASHINGTON, D.C. (KELO.com) — Senator John Thune says he’s open to renaming military bases now named for Confederate generals.
According to The Hill, Thune tells reporters in Washington that its a debate whose time has probably come, that you reevaluate such things based on time and circumstances. He says he’s not wedded to the idea that those names on military bases are “eternal.”
Senator Mike Rounds also supports the potential renaming of bases, saying that maybe the bases should be named for people who fought for and not against the United States.
President Donald Trump has said he would not even consider renaming the bases, even though the Pentagon has signaled it’s open to at least discussing it.
