WASHINGTON, D.C. (KELO.com) — Senator Mike Rounds says police chokeholds should only be used as a last resort.
Rounds favors restrictions except when the life of a police officer is threatened.
“I’d have a very difficult time taking that away from a law enforcement officer. At the same time, I don’t think it should be a regular practice to put people into a chokehold.”
President Donald Trump’s new executive order bans police chokeholds except when the life of an officer is at a risk.
Some police departments already avoid using chokeholds. Sioux Falls Police Chief Matt Burns tells KELO.com News that his officers are not trained to use chokeholds, but they are trained in how to get out of them.
