SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Alex Jensen has defeated incumbent Theresa Stehly to win Sioux Falls’ at-large city council election by 110 votes, but a recount is coming.
Following one of the highest-profile campaigns in city history, Jensen collected 13,640 votes to Stehly’s 13,530.
Stehly confirmed she will be asking for a recount in a Facebook post Wednesday evening.
Stehly faced a larger deficit after in-person votes were counted Tuesday night, but received a slim majority of absentee ballots counted.
In the Northwest City Council District, incumbent Greg Neitzert hung on to his seat over Julian Beaudion. Current results place the margin at 61% to 39%. Neitzert has won 2,875 votes to Beaudion’s 1,820.
In the Sioux Falls School Board race, incumbent Cynthia Mickelson defeated challenger Sarah Stokke. Current numbers put the result at 70% to 30%. Mickelson has received 14,818 votes to Stokke’s 6,420.
Mickelson thanked her supporters on Facebook Wednesday evening.
“I appreciate every vote and I will continue to work hard to represent all students, families, staff and taxpayers,” Mickelson said. She thanked Stokke for “having the courage to run for public office.”
In the Republican primary for Minnehaha County State’s Attorney, Daniel Haggar defeated incumbent Crystal Johnson and challenger Paul Bengford. Haggar has received 46% of the vote, Johnson 40%, and Bengford 14%. Vote totals are 5,085 for Haggar, 4,443 for Johnson, and 1,611 for Bengford.
For the Sioux Falls City Charter amendments, Amendment A, which toughens residence requirements for City Council candidates, passed with 85% of the vote
Amendment B, which increased the number of signatures needed in City petition drives, also passed with 74% of the vote.
The votes are not official until they are canvassed.
