WASHINGTON, D.C. (KELO.com) — South Dakota’s Congressional Delegation has sent a joint letter to the heads of the U.S. Justice and Interior Departments, asking for help to sort out the checkpoint standoff.
A copy of the letter is attached to this story.
The Cheyenne River and Pine Ridge reservations have COVID-19 checkpoints on state and U.S. roads.
Congressman Dusty Johnson and Senators Mike Rounds and John Thune are asking the feds to provide additional guidance to Governor Kristi Noem and to the tribes.
The delegation’s letter does not take sides and merely notes the disagreement about legal authorities in the matter.
Governor Noem has threatened legal action, but at the same time is trying to get Washington more involved. She’s also asked for help from the White House.
