SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — At its Tuesday, May 26, 2020, special meeting, the City Council will consider a resolution encouraging the people of Sioux Falls to be diligent in their actions and behavior to continue slowing the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19 and to protect individuals who may be vulnerable to serious complications or death from COVID-19.
The Council will also consider the second reading of a repeal of Ordinance 47-20, the “No Mingling” ordinance, at the meeting. If the community experiences an increase in cases before the Council meeting, the item could also be deferred to another date for repeal.
“The people of Sioux Falls have taken the threat of COVID-19 seriously and we successfully flattened our curve,” said Mayor Paul TenHaken. “At this time, I feel comfortable recommending the removal of the City’s mitigation efforts and sending a message of consumer confidence, yet we need to remain cautious. This pandemic is not over and COVID is still present throughout Sioux Falls. Each of us needs to continue to take our personal responsibility seriously to slow the spread of COVID and protect our vulnerable populations.”
The “Safe and Healthy Sioux Falls” resolution is attached.
Without significant adherence to guidance on social distancing, good respiratory hygiene and isolation of sick individuals, the initial projections of COVID-19 infections and potential increased hospital admissions indicated a peak in the Sioux Falls area this week.
Thanks to the people of Sioux Falls following federal, state and local guidance, the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19 was reduced and the local health care systems continue to experience the capacity needed for potential COVID-19-related admissions.
The Council meeting will be held at 3 p.m. on May 26 at Carnegie Town Hall. The City’s Board of Health will discuss the current regulations and consider the resolution at 12 noon on May 26 at Falls Community Health.
