PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) — The South Dakota Department of Health reports that 24 percent of the 3,700 Smithfield workers and close contacts tested positive for the coronavirus.
There were mass testing events last week at Washington High School in preparation for the reopening of the Sioux Falls Smithfield packing plant.
The state is now ramping up testing for people in long term care facilities.
The plan is to test every single resident and staffer in those facilities for COVID-19.
Health Secretary Kim Malsam-Rysdon also says the state will test “sentinel” or random individuals as part of the new testing protocol.
