SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — The Sioux Falls Tenant Rights Union is again asking City Council for a temporary moratorium on evictions for non-payment of rent.
The group’s Wil Anderson says evictions have gone up 20 percent since the coronavirus crisis began and the crisis is growing with so many people out of work.
“We have ten evictions on file for the eight business days we’ve had so far in May. And if that trend continues, we will end May with approximately 26 evictions.”
Anderson emphasizes that the moratorium they want is for non-payment of rent only. Tenants could still be thrown out for trashing a place or other lease violations.
