SIOUX FALLS. S.D. (KELO.com) — A corrections officer at the Minnehaha County Jail has tested positive for COVID-19.
The officer last worked on April 17, according to a statement from the county sheriff’s department. Jail employees have been undergoing screening since the end of March.
The jail also announced another food service worker has tested positive. It is the fourth positive test among employees of Summit Foods, the food service provider for the jail.
Two more inmate food workers have also tested positive, bringing that number to four. Two inmates who worked in the kitchen tested negative for the virus, according to the release. Inmates stopped working in the jail kitchen on Monday to prevent further exposures.
The jail said it is “aggressively monitoring” other inmates who came into contact with those who tested positive.
Warden Mike Mattson called the news of the positive test “disheartening” but said he is “confident in our ability to meet this challenge and future challenges with vigor and as a team.”
