SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Sioux Falls’ municipal and school board elections are set for Tuesday, April 14 despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. While the election date appears to be set in stone, there are still precautions voters can take to help slow the spread of the disease.
Registered voters still have time to request an absentee ballot to vote by mail, something the city says is “strongly encouraged” to adhere to social distancing guidlines. Voters need to make sure they are registered to vote and submit an application through the mail to their county auditor to get an absentee ballot. Find a link to the form here.
Voters can also avoid crowds by casting their ballot before election day through in-person absentee voting. This will take place at the Minnehaha County Election Center on 220 West Sixth Street starting Monday. The center will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, as well as Saturday, April 11 from 8 a.m. to noon.
The city is asking voters to bring their own pens for in-person absentee voting to avoid spreading the virus. The pen must have blue or black ink.
Sioux Falls City Councilors have expressed support for pushing back the city election date, but legal constraints make that almost impossible. Councilor Christine Erickson said only an act from the state legislature would allow the election date to move.
