SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — The Second Judicial Circuit Court announces a commencement ceremony in honor of the Drug Court program in Sioux Falls, SD. Drug Court started in January of 2011.
The Court currently serves 79 participants, with the capacity to hold 90. This Graduation event will have a Keynote Speaker, Supreme Court Justice Kern.
The public is invited to attend the court session and commencement celebration, which will be held on Thursday, February 27th at 1:30 PM. The ceremony will follow immediately after the regular Drug Court session in Courtroom 6B in the Minnehaha County Court House, 425 N Dakota Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD.
Drug Court is working to reduce the number of persons incarcerated, protect public safety and ensure participants are employed, are supporting their families and are attending necessary treatment.
September 18th, 2012 marked the first Graduation Ceremony for Drug Court. These Drug Court graduates epitomize what Drug Court is doing for the Sioux Falls community.
Together, these now 87 graduates have accumulated 44,234 days of sobriety. To date, the graduates have paid all fines, court costs, and restitution.
Each of these people would have been in the South Dakota State Penitentiary were it not for Drug Court. Not only does the successful completion of Drug Court help reduce the prison population, and it also has reduced children in care.
These graduates are working, paying taxes, and caring for their children – and in some cases, their grandchildren.
