SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Sioux Falls Police Chief Matt Burns says though the city grew by 3,500 people in 2019 and service calls went up 3 percent, the overall crime rate is steady.
That being said, the Chief noted that meth seizures are up from 56 pounds seized in 2018 to 133 pounds seized in 2019. He says that is due to an allocation of resources to fight the drug, and the battle to stop the distribution routes is ongoing. Burns says the Narcotics Crime Unit, which works at the neighborhood level, freed up the Drug Task Force to go after the big drug dealers.
Burns also wants the public to secure their vehicles. Of the 89 reports of stolen vehicles in January 2020, 77 had the keys in the car and 28 were running. The Chief noted that none of the stolen vehicles were the result of forced entry.
The Chief said, “Overall, we remain a safe city.”
Chief Burns was on the Greg Belfrage show.
