SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst has introduced new legislation aimed at cutting spending in Washington.
Ernst made the case for the MAKE CENTS Act on the Senate floor Thursday.
“If hardworking Iowa families have to manage their budgets, we really should expect Washington to do the same,” Ernst said.
Ernst’s proposed legislation has five parts:
– Requiring a report on federal programs that are $1 billion over budget or five years or more behind schedule.
– Making sure government-funded projects are transparent about their price tags.
– Restricting “use-it-or-lose-it” government spending toward the end of the fiscal year.
– Not letting the Congress recess if their budget is overdue.
– Withholding payment to Congress if their budget is overdue.
Ernst used NASA’s Artemis moon mission as an example of improper spending, citing the agency’s recent request for more money to fund the project.
