PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) — A bill to streamline the carrying of a concealed firearm inside the State Capitol in Pierre passed the South Dakota Senate Monday.
The current law passed last year requires gun holders to pre-register with capitol security every thirty days. Senate Bill 98 would extend that permission to the entire year.
Senator Jim Stalzer of Sioux Falls said it was “a hassle” for legislators and government employees to have to register every 30 days in order to carry a gun in the building.
Anyone wishing to carry a gun in the Capitol needs to undergo a federal background check, which Stalzer says would still be re-evaluated by the state on a monthly basis.
The bill now heads to the House.
