SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Minnehaha County Emergency Manager Jason Gearman is working on a plan to create a first-of-its-kind sandbag warehouse.
It would be heated, filled with thousands of bags ready to go, so that people aren’t running around days before flooding, wondering where the sandbags will come from. Did you ever try to use a frozen sandbag?
Gearman says he is working on the idea, hopefully, in partnership with the City of Sioux Falls. He says a warehouse facility has already been identified.
Gearman has told county officials that soil saturation levels are at the highest levels they have ever been for this time of year, more evidence that spring flooding could be severe.
The proposed sandbag warehouse would be a practical way to prepare for the worst. Gearman believes it would be the first such facility in South Dakota.
