SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — The 30-member task force to help determine new school boundaries in Sioux Falls is now open for what could be a ticklish business.
Parents and students like their schools and talk about moving to another school can be emotional. Task Force Member Kent Alberty half-jokes about what he hopes to accomplish.
“My goal in this is, number one, that we get through this process and that the 30 of us are still speaking to one another when we’re done.”
Alberty says he believes the process this time can be much better than it was 25 years ago.
“The process that was used when the boundaries were re-drawn then created a lot of anger and angst and I don’t believe that has to open through this.”
Schools Superintendent Brian Maher addressed the task force at its first meeting.
“You are not here to endorse anything that we’ve come up with behind closed doors. You are here to help us to come up with a solution that makes a lot of sense.”
The task force discussed middle school boundaries at its first meeting. It’s next meeting – open to the public – is 5;30 p.m., January 29, at the Instructional Planning Center.
Sioux Falls is getting a new high school and middle school and will soon get a new elementary school. The new schools require a new look at school boundaries.
