SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — The Minnehaha County Commission, for the first time, will have a direct say on refugee resettlement in the county.
The Trump Administration is allowing local governments to opt-out of the resettlement program.
So Commissioners will take up Lutheran Social Services’ request next week.
The Church-affiliated group is looking to relocate up to 100 new refugees in the city.
The Commission on Tuesday was briefed on the new federal executive order by LSS officials.
Governor Kristi Noem has already responded to the executive order by saying that South Dakota will continue to allow refugee resettlement.
LSS Official Rebecca Kiesow-Knudsen tells KELO Radio News that their refugee resettlement program in South Dakota has been a success and America has a history of welcoming people fleeing from persecution.
