RAPID CITY, S. D. (KELO.com) — Sheriff’s officials say a man who killed a person in a Rapid City apartment has been shot and killed by law enforcement after opening fire on officers.
Authorities say officers were called to the apartment building on the 800 block of Minnesota Street about 5 p.m. Sunday, on a report of shots fired. Pennington County Sheriff Kevin Thom says when officers arrived a man on the second floor of the building began shooting at them, striking one of their vehicles.
Thom called the situation “very dynamic, very chaotic,” when talking to reporters Sunday night.
“It’s a multi-agency response. It was the sheriff’s office, the police department, the highway patrol, and then, of course, the fire department, and emergency medical services responded. And the emergency dispatch center was critical to this situation as it unfolded, it was very dynamic, very chaotic as it unfolded. The community’s safe, there are no safety concerns at this point in the neighborhood. Because it was an officer-involved shooting, the sheriff’s office will assist the Division of Criminal Investigation with that aspect of the shooting, as well as assist the police department with the other victim who’s deceased and with their investigation.”
Assistant Police Chief Don Hedrick described the events, saying that officers entered the building and fatally shot the man who fired at them on arrival at the scene.
“Upon arrival, our officers were fired upon by the suspect. We believe the suspect was on the second floor while firing rounds at our officers. Our officers entered the building, which is an apartment building and engaged the suspect. The suspect is currently deceased.”
Hedrick says a shooting victim was located in a second-floor apartment as police were able to move into the structure.
“Upon further investigation, our officers found a victim on the second story of the building, and while life-saving measures were attempted, the victim is also deceased.”
Hedrick declined to identify either the alleged shooter or the victim, saying next of kin would need to be notified. Hedrick says that a full investigation is underway.
