SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — As duck hunting declines in South Dakota and throughout the country, the state Game Fish and Parks Department has a new idea.
The department is considering a new kind of license where hunters can shoot three ducks per season, down from the typical six. In exchange, there would be no restrictions on the duck’s sex or species.
The GFP’s Emmett Keyser told KELO-AM’s It’s Your Business with Bill Zortman this sort of license would be appealing to less experienced hunters who have trouble identifying ducks on the wing.
“It takes away that anxiety of shooting the wrong [type of] duck, the wrong sex of duck,” Keyser said, adding that the license could serve as a steppingstone to a full-fledged license.
GFP biologist Rocco Murano said the department hopes to start experimenting with the rule in the 2021-22 season.
