SIOUX FALLS S.D. (KELO.com) — Presumptive probation, hemp and immigration were some of the major issues addressed in the Sioux Falls City Council’s list of 2020 legislative priorities.
With the 2020 state legislative session looming, the council approved a list of 21 items it will support heading into the new year.
They include repealing presumptive probation, a rule mandating low-level drug offenders are given probation rather than jail time. That stance faced a challenge from the South Dakota ACLU, who said repealing the rule wouldn’t benefit the city.
The council also expressed its support for legalizing industrial hemp, a hot-button issue in South Dakota following Gov. Kristi Noem’s veto of a legal hemp bill in last year’s legislative session.
Other stances of note included:
– Support for legal immigration to grow the state’s workforce
– Support for increased funding for mental health and addiction resources.
– Support for the state conducting driver’s license exams in languages other than English.
