SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Reports say the United States and China have reached a tentative trade deal, and Sen. Mike Rounds is keeping a keen eye on it.
Rounds said he was briefed by U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer earlier today.
“He made it clear that he was optimistic that we were moving in the right direction,” Rounds said. “He didn’t want to say more than that.”
The agreement is considered the first phase of a multi-step negotiation. Rounds said he and his constituents are particularly interested in whether China will relent on soybean tariffs the country imposed.
Rounds said the agreement is not final and the US has to be assured that China will live up to any agreement that is reached.
