SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — While most of us are kicked back on Thanksgiving watching football or whatever, a loyal army of volunteers prepares Thanksgiving dinner for the needy at the Banquet.
Cletus, 73, loves serving in the food line, as the people come through.
“Boy, their eyes just twinkle and to see those little kids. They have smiles from ear to ear.”
Cletus says that the older he gets the more he realizes that there are so many things to be thankful for and you can give some of that back.
For the past 18 Thanksgivings, Gary Murfield has been helping at the Banquet, doing the very same job each year. He and his wife help de-bone the turkeys, fresh from the ovens.
” Doesn’t take too much to do that,” says Gary with a laugh, “You’ve just gotta have good hands that can withstand the heat.”
Gary, 76, says his wife’s father died back in 1999 and he was very active at the Banquet, so the family thought they’d do something each year to remember and honor the dad.
