SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Sioux Falls City Council has unanimously approved a life-size statue of Martin Luther King for Van Eps Park in downtown.
Local Sculptor Porter Williams is putting up the statue at his own expense.
“Being a sculptor for the past 30 years, this is one of the pieces that I really wanted to place in the City of Sioux Falls,”
The famed Civil Rights leader visited Sioux Falls in 1961 and stayed at a church that used to be located near the park.
“Suitable person, who better than Dr. Martin Luther King to be placed in a very suitable location, a location where he actually visited,” says City Councilor Rick Kiley.
Williams says he hopes to have the statue completed and up in the park by January 2020, in time for King Day.
