SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — There’s more to being a member of the Sioux Falls Civil Air Patrol’s Cadet Color Guard than just presenting the colors at parades and events.
Though that is a big part of what they do.
Color guard members also have to know how to perform drill commands, how to prepare a uniform, get quizzed on their CAP knowledge–and even have to fly a drone. And they have to compete against others.
Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the South Dakota Air National Guard Base, the Sioux Falls Composite Squadron is holding its first-ever “Cadet Exhibition.” The event is partly in preparation for the South Dakota Wing competition next year, and, hopefully, competing in regional and national competitions after that.
The competition team from Sioux Falls will perform but then also help their cadet colleagues learn drill basics, how to present the colors, and how to fly drones.
Members of the SDANG will act as judges to help get the team ready for their first-round competition.
Civil Air Patrol cadets are 12 to 18 years old. CAP officers are 18 on up. The Sioux Falls squadron has over 80 members. It recently assisted in the search for the missing pilot in the Aberdeen area and various searches for missing people in the Black Hills.
The CAP’s three missions are emergency services, cadet programs, and aerospace education. The CAP is the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force. All CAP members are volunteers.
