SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — A woman from California with South Dakota ties stopped by Sioux Falls to thank firefighters who traveled west to battle wildfires.
Janis Powers lost her Sonoma County home in a fire in 2017. She and her husband rebuilt it, but it was threatened again this October when wildfires raged.
“It’s such a distance. You would expect locals to go there, but to have people from this far away be over there fighting it, it really touched me,” Powers said.
Powers happened to be in South Dakota at the time of both fires visiting her daughter and grandchildren. She said the latest blaze came within four miles of her home.
