SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Phone scammers have been impersonating county sheriff’s deputies to trick people into giving them money, according to a release from the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Department.
The department says scammers are using the names of real-life deputies in an attempt to extort money from people.
The release pointed out two giveaways to listen for. First, the county won’t call people to inform them of arrest warrants. Second, they’ll never ask for money in the form of pre-paid gift cards.
If anyone says either of those things, that’s when the county says you should hang up the phone.
