SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Charles Rhines did not apologize to the family of the man he murdered before Rhines died by lethal injection at the State Prison in Sioux Falls.
Instead, Rhines said that he forgave the family of Donnivan Shaeffer for hating him.
Peggy Schaeffer, the mother of the murdered man, tried to make something life-giving out of the execution.
“Today do something kind for someone, in honor, because life is just too short.”
She wanted the day to focus on Donnivan, on his life, and who he was, not on the man who killed him.
“The roller hockey champion, the state archery champion, the guy who drove that old red pickup.”
Rhines murdered Shaefer in 1992 at a donut shop in Rapid City.
