SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Sioux Falls needs more money to clean up snow.
After an unusually snowy start to 2019 and an early dusting this fall, finance director Shawn Pritchett says the city could need as much as 3 million extra dollars by the end of the year.
The city doesn’t have to spend all the money it asks for; Pritchett said a drier winter will be easier on the budget.
Pritchett said the city was hit with 40 total inches of snow from January to May of 2019, about seven inches more than usual. That leaves the city in need of some extra cash, even in a best-case scenario.
“We expect we will be 100% expended without any snow or de-icing events in 2019,” Pritchett said at the city council’s informational meeting Tuesday.
Rising tax revenue will cover some of the costs. The money the city reaps from sales taxes is currently growing at its highest rate in years.
