FORT, PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) — Thursday President Donald Trump posthumously pardoned Fort Pierre, South Dakota scientist Zay Jefferies.
Jefferies, who grew up in Fort Pierre, helped develop artillery shells capable of piercing fortified German tanks. He also contributed to ending the war in the Pacific by contributing to the Manhattan Project.
He was indicted in 1941 of anti-trust charges, his prosecution was deferred until after the war. It was said due to his vital contributions to the U.S. military. Jefferies would be fined $2,500 in 1948 with no jail time.
