SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Vaping is banned in Sioux Falls schools, but kids are still finding ways to sneak a puff.
“They try to do it in enclosed spaces where teachers can’t find them. They hide it in long-sleeved shirts and do it that way in the classroom,” says School Board President Cynthia Mickelson.
Mickelson says the School District’s anti-vaping strategy focuses on education and awareness – the more students and parents know about the dangers of vaping, the less likely they will be to do it.
Some school districts, including Dell Rapids and Mitchell, have installed vaping sensors, but Mickelson says there are challenges in a school district as large as Sioux Falls.
“Do you just put them in the bathrooms? Well, they are vaping in the classrooms. Lincoln High School has 95 classrooms. At $1500 a pop…..”
The School District was holding a town hall meeting on vaping Monday night at the Instructional Planning Center.
