SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — “It is historic.”
Those were Superintendent Brian Maher’s words in response to findings that for the first time, the largest district in the state has crossed the 24,000-student threshold.
“It’s actually a little bit over what we thought,” Maher said. “We thought our growth would be a little more conservative this year. We thought we’d be below that 200 mark this year, but we’re over that.”
The Sioux Falls School District has close to 250 more students this school year compared to last year.
The number of pre-kindergarten students has actually gone down slightly from August 28, 2018 to August 27, 2019: from 1,118 to 1,004.
And if that trend continues, school officials say the district will be well ahead of estimated growth projections as the community prepares to open a new high school and middle school by fall 2021 and a new elementary school by fall 2024.
