SIOUX FALLS, SD, (KELO.com)– The Sioux Falls City Council approved the bronze sculpture of Coach Richard Greeno being placed on the riverbank near Tut Hill.
The statue is of the coach flashing his famous smile while running.
Council Member Rick Kiley knew Greeno and said the statue resembled him well.
“I saw that smile as he was passing me at the end of a road race. It was just a Monday night road race, which is pretty leisurely. He waited until the last ten or fifteen yards to go zipping by me and turned and flashed that smile as he crossed the line ahead of me,” Kiley said.
The statue will stand at five foot eight inches on a pedestal and have a memorial plaque of the coach.
Rich Greeno was a track coach for both the University of Sioux Falls and Lincoln High School. He passed away at the age of 88 in March of 2017.
