SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Summer is winding down and kids are headed back to school.
Parents should be aware of some dangers kids might have on their phones.
Detective Travis Stauffacher with the Minnehaha County Sheriffs Department says the Sheriffs Department is seeing kids “between the ages of 11 and 17 sexting.”
The most common apps kids are using in this area are Snapchat and WhatsApp.
WhatsApp is a messaging app that allows texts, video calls, photo sharing and voicemails with users worldwide.
Snapchat is one of the most popular social media apps in the world, Snapchat lets users take and share photos and videos. The app also lets people see your location. The videos and photos taken are only accessible for a couple of seconds then they are deleted.
Detective Stauffacher says behaviors parents should look for include “spending long hours online especially at night, suddenly turning the computer or phone off, talking to people on the phone you don’t know.”
