SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — An increased focus on better roads is at the core of Mayor Paul TenHaken’s proposed 2020 budget for Sioux Falls.
“Our residents expect better roads and I’m prepared to make the tough decisions to address what I believe to be one of the top drivers of resident satisfaction.”
The mayor proposes that the highest proportion of sales and use tax revenue in ten years be used for street repair and reconstruction. Two of the most important projects in the coming months will be the reconstruction of the iconic 8th Street Bridge, spanning the Big Sioux River downtown, and of the roads for the city’s new high school and middle school.
TenHaken also wants to hire 20 additional city workers, including more police officers.
“Crime is probably the most unfortunate result of a growing city. Our crime rates remain consistent with our community growth.”
Mayor TenHaken says extensive feeback from city workers and from city residents sent a very clear message as he developed the new budget.
“Focus on the essentials, specifically infrastructure and safety.”
Mayor TenHaken says he also used his ‘One Sioux Falls’ concept to develop the budget proposal, focusing on safety and health, accessible housing, workforce, and engaging people.
