SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Here’s your morning sports update for Tuesday, January 25, 2022.
– USD Men’s Basketball gets a narrow win last night over Western Illinois. Tasos Kamateros had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead five South Dakota players in double figures. Mason Archambault also added 15 points for the Coyotes.
– The Minnesota Wild matched their franchise record for goals in an 8-2 victory last night over the Montreal Canadiens. Connor Dewar got his first career goal and added an assist when Nico Sturm scored 22 seconds later to help the Wild break open the game in the second period. The Wild improved to 10-0-1 in their last 11 games at Xcel Energy Center, a stretch where they’ve outscored their opponents 56-25.
– Twenty U.S. players trained on a whitened field in 22-degree weather in Columbus, Ohio, as the United States began preparations for this week’s chilly World Cup qualifier against El Salvador. The team dubbed the conditions “Snowhio” on its Twitter account. The expected temperature for Thursday night’s kickoff is 25 degrees.
– Auburn has climbed into the Number 1 spot in the AP Top 25 men’s college basketball poll for the first time in Auburn’s history. The Tigers beat Kentucky over the weekend for their 15th consecutive win.
– Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens are in the bottom of the last inning in their Hall of Fame bids. Either they get in Tuesday, or Cooperstown may elude them entirely. David Ortiz knows a thing or two about clutch swings late in the game, but he might put this one away in his first at-bat.
– Fresh off an overtime win, even Andy Reid is questioning the NFL’s overtime rules. One day after Reid’s Chiefs won the epic divisional round game against Buffalo, Reid recognized how fortunate Kansas City was. He said he expects the league to look at the rules that end the game if the team with the first possession of OT scores a touchdown.
– If LeBron James is able to score 6 points during tonight’s game between the Laker’s and the Nets, he’ll be exactly 2000 points shy of the all-time scoring record. It’s no longer be a question of if James will pass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the NBA’s all-time scoring leader, but when.
