Chamberlain, S.D. (KELO.com) — A Wessington Springs man, in jail for an alleged assault, is now looking at a second round of charges including assaulting a law enforcement officer.
The Mitchell Daily Republic reports Jesse Knight, 31, allegedly fought his way out of the Brule County Jail last Monday. Authorities were called to the jail and located an injured jailer who said Knight had broken off a piece of angle iron and began assaulting an inmate. When another inmate and the jailer attempted to intervene, authorities allege Knight struck both with the iron and then escaped.
Seven officers from three agencies assisted in Knight’s capture. One inmate was transferred to a Sioux Falls hospital with a five-inch head laceration.
