Honey bee hives threatened by colony collapse

by

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Researchers says about one out of every three bites of food that we eat exists because of pollinators.

State Biologist Kevin Luebke with the Natural Resources Conservation Service says beekeepers are losing an unsustainable up to 35 percent of their hives each year to colony collapse disorder.

Luebke says the loss of honey bees puts stress on local native pollinators to do more work but they can't pollinate every plant.  He says almonds must have the European honey bee and most every berry and melon relies on them.

In South Dakota at least 40 different agricultural crops are served by pollinators

Luebke says researchers don’t know what causes colony collapse disorder.
