United 232 25 years later

Sioux City, IA (KELO AM) - This weekend, survivors of the crash of United 232 and first responders of that day are gathering in Sioux City to mark the 25 years that have elapsed since the crash.

On July 19, 1989, United Flight 232, a DC-10,  lost an engine high over northwest Iowa.  The resulting loss of all hydraulic pressure led to the loss of all control surfaces of the plane

The only control the pilots had was by using the two remaining engines to make turns and altitude adjustments.  Captain Al Haynes had doubts about making the airport in Sioux City, Iowa.

The plane almost made it intact, but shortly before landing, the plane dipped and a fiery crash ensued. More than one hundred people died in the crash.  More amazing, 184 survived.

Some of those have returned to Sioux City to share experiences and remember those that did not make it.
