Sioux Falls, S.D. (KELO-AM) - The South Dakota Department of Health reports more than 500 cases of Shigellosis since late last year. In 2012, there were only 11 cases in the state. Shigellosis is a bacterial disease that can cause diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps that last five to seven days. State epidemiologist Lon Kightlinger says Shigellosis can spread rapidly through a community and is usually spread though fecal contamination. Kightlinger says the disease is rarely fatal.
