Sioux Falls, SD (KELO AM) - On Tuesday the USPS announced it plans to move forward with consolidate over 80 mail processing and handling centers in an effort to save over $3.5 billion over the next five years. Included on that list was a plan to close the processing center in Huron and consolidate much of that center’s workload with the processing center in Sioux Falls. According to the Postal Service, the planned consolidations are to begin in January of 2015 and be completed by the fall of that year.

More details about the planned closures will be released in the coming weeks. The affected facilities range from rural centers such as the one in Huron, to centers in major metropolitan areas such as Houston and Boston. All told 82 facilities and nearly 15,000 employees will be affected by the proposed changes.

As far as mail delivery goes, the change is expected to slow the average delivery of a first-class letter from 2.14 days to 2.25 days. Over 50% of all first-class mail would still be delivered within 2 days.
