Concrete pour of the floor at PREMIER Center achieves “Super Flat” Standards

Concrete Pour of the Ice Floor at Denny Sanford PREMIER Center Achieves “Super Flat” Standards

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO-AM) The concrete pour of the ice floor at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center took place on Saturday, January 11. The NHL-size ice rink is 200 feet by 85 feet, and the concrete floor flatness and levelness creates smooth ice, which is essential for hockey play. Because these measurements are so precise, the ground was graded with lasers, the concrete was poured using lasers, and the concrete was checked with lasers. Tolerances are very tight, less than the thickness of a sheet of paper.

American Engineering and Testing performed floor flatness and floor levelness tests on the newly poured concrete immediately after it was finished. A total of eight sequenced measurements were taken, and the average result was compared to the specified values for the floor. The values that were achieved at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center exceeded project specifications.

“A sports floor like the one placed at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center takes months of planning and a tremendous amount of expertise,” says Richard Baehr, Commissioning Manager at CIMCO Refrigeration, Inc. “The partnership between CIMCO, Mortenson, and Peska successfully set a plan in place that ensured that this ice rink slab was one of CIMCO’s best-placed slabs ever. We know that this floor will flawlessly support the entertainment of the citizens of the Sioux Empire for many years to come.”

“The City of Sioux Falls would like to recognize Mortenson Construction, CIMCO, Peska Construction, and Concrete Materials for their extensive preplanning and flawless execution of one of the most significant milestones in the construction of this building,” says Mark Cotter, Director of Public Works.
