Johnson commends Obama for paying tribal contract support costs

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KELO-AM) U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) commended the Obama Administration’s decision to pay Contract Support Costs (CSC) owed to tribes throughout Indian Country in full. Senator Johnson joined a group of 10 Senators last September in sending a letter that opposed the Administration’s proposal to cap CSC owed to federally recognized tribes and encouraged the Administration to fulfill all contracts with tribal governments.

“Tribes across Indian Country have a victory in the Administration’s decision to fully fund fiscal year 2014 BIA and IHS contract support costs,” Johnson said. “This is good news for tribal nations in their continued pursuit of self-determination and sovereignty. Last fall, I joined with ten fellow Senators to expressly oppose the Administration’s plan to cap Contract Support Costs. Tribes have struggled year to year to secure funding to provide critical services to its tribal citizens, and the Administration’s decision is a great step forward for our federal government to meet its treaty and trust responsibilities to tribal nations.”
