Pierre, SD (KELO-AM) The South Dakota American Legion would like to see the Pledge of Allegiance recited in all schools, but questions whether the State Legislature should force the schools to do it.
State Adjutant, Denny Brenden, is reacting to a bill unamiously approved in House committee Wednesday that would require the pledge in every classroom in South Dakota.
Brenden says every child in South Dakota should have the opportunity to say the Pledge, but it should not be mandated by the Legislature, but left up to the local districts.
The Pledge issue really heated up after the Sioux Falls School District voted to require the pledge be recited in all grades. Rapid City and other communities soon followed suit.
The state-wide Pledge bill now goes to the House floor.
