SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Public Utilities Commissioner Gary Hanson says it was a Sioux Falls excavator who was the force behind the One Call Center for safe digging.
Hanson says Tom Krueger of Krueger Excavating saw the need for a quick response. Hanson says he and Krueger served in the state legislature in the 80's and that when the push began for a one call center to serve all underground utilities.
Hanson says the One Call program responded to almost 137,00 locate requests last year which activate over 800,00 locate tickets for utilities across South Dakota.
State law requires that you call 8-1-1 at least two days before any digging project, even if you're using a shovel to dig a post hole.
This is safe digging month in South Dakota.
