Sioux tribes camping against Keystone

by

Undated (KELO-AM) South Dakota's Sioux tribes have erected a unique encampment in rural Tripp County near Witten to publicize their opposition to the Keystone Pipeline.

They have set up seven tipis representating the seven council fires of the Lakota. The camp is manned 24/7.

Organizers say having all the council fires united hasn't happened for over 100 years.

The Keystone Pipeline, which will carry raw energy from Canada to refineries on the Texas Coast, will run through West River, South Dakota.

The Rosebud's Russell Eagle Bear says his biggest concern is the pipeline leaking into the water supply. He says it may not happen right away, but eventually it will. He says they were even hunkered down in the tipis during Monday's blizzard to show how serious they are.

President Obama is expected to make a decision on Keystone soon. Supporters say it will mean thousands of jobs and help cut America's need for foriegn energy.
