Halloween safety tips

by

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Sioux Falls is a very safe community but Halloween can put a scare into parents.

Officer Sam Clemens says vandalism is the biggest problem with pumpkin chuckin' the most popular form.  Clemens also says it's best if kids go out in groups and always cross streets at the corners.  And while the residential speed limit is 25 mph, Clemens says it's best if motorists go slower tonight.

Fire/Rescue Division Chief Jeff Helm advises giving flashlights or glow sticks to trick-or-treaters.  He says poufy costumes can be a tripping hazard and keep all costumes away from flames.  He suggests using battery-powered lights in jack-o-lanterns.

Halloween safety isn't just about avoiding unwrapped candy.  "Safe Kids Worldwide" spokeswoman Kate Carr recommends parents instruct children to put down their smartphones and keep their eyes open for cars on dark, busy streets.
