Despite lower pheasant numbers South Dakota's economy still benefits

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Even though pheasant numbers are down in South Dakota the economic boost of the hunting season should approach $200,000,000.

Chuck Schleuterof Game, Fish and Parks says the fall tradition is a good economic boost across South Dakota.  He says businesses large and small, from motels to cafes and specialty stores, all benefit from local and out-of-state hunters in October and November.

Schleuter says this summer’s brood route survey indicates that the spring pheasant hatch was down as much as sixty percent.

Still, Schleuter says, if the pheasant population were to fall below one million birds that would still be more than in any other state.
