SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KWSN) – Missouri Western's Cortrez Colbert hit two free throws with three seconds left in the game to give the Griffons (1-0) a 65-64 win as Augustana's last-second 3-point attempt fell short. The Vikings (0-1) have not lost a season-opener in six seasons, the last coming on Nov. 15, 2008 against Chardron State.Daniel Jansen led all players with 17 points while recording his fourth career double-double adding 10 rebounds. Casey Schilling added 16 points for the Vikings while picking up nine rebounds and a career-high nine blocks.Yuriy Malashenko tied his career with 11 rebounds while recording his second career double-double scoring 10 points. Missouri Western was led by Ryan Devers' 15 points. Colbert scored 14 points for the Griffons while grabbing four rebounds. Augustana finished the game shooting 36 percent (20 of 55) from the field but was just 5 of 25 (20 percent) from 3-point range. The Vikings got to the line 30 times in the contest, hitting 19 free throws for 63 percent from the line. Missouri Western shot 38 percent (24 of 63) from the field, including 4 of 19 from 3-point range. Augustana turned the ball over 17 times in the game, leading to 18 points for the Griffons. Augustana grabbed a 4-3 lead on a basket by Schilling with 16:24 to play in the first half but Missouri Western went on a 7-0 run over the next 50 seconds to take a 10-4 after two Viking turnovers. The Vikings responded by going on an 11-2 run over the next four minutes, highlighted by two Malashenko 3-pointers to give the Vikings a 15-12 lead. Augustana extended its run to 20-8 with 6:39 to play in the first half taking its largest lead of the half at 24-18 after a 3-pointer by Adam Beyer. Missouri Western then scored 12 of the game's next 16 points to take its first lead since the 12-minute mark at 30-28 after a 3-pointer by Adarius Fulton and a free throw by Cortrez Colbert. Schilling scored a bucket for Augustana as time expired and the Vikings went into the locker room trailing 34-32. Jansen and Schilling led all players in the first half with 10 points each. Jansen was 3 of 5 from the field and hit 4 of 4 shots from the free throw line. The two also led Augustana on the boards with Schilling grabbing five and Jasnen four. The Vikings finished the first half shooting 39 percent from the field, including 3 of 14 from 3-point range. Malashenko hit two of Augustana's three shots from 3-point range and finished the half with six points. Missouri Western hit 13 of 32 (40 percent) shots in the first half and was led by Devers who scored nine points on 4 of 6 shooting with a 3-pointer. The Griffons forced Augustana into 11 turnovers in the first half, scoring 14 points off of them. Augustana and Missouri Western traded baskets over the first 10 minutes of the second half and the Griffons led by as much as six three times but Augustana twice cut it to a one-point game. Jamall Taylor made it a 46-45 game in favor of Missouri Western with 13:17 to play in the game. The Griffons extended their lead back to six at 53-47 after back-to-back baskets, including a 3-pointer by Kalvin Balque and a basket by Cedric Clinkscales. Augustana kept chipping away at Missouri Western's lead hitting four free throws over the next two minutes allowing the Vikings to cut the lead to two at 58-56 on a 3-pointer by Ethan Guske from the left corner. Augustana finally regained the lead with nine seconds left in the game on a 3-pointer by Guske to put the Vikings up 64-63. Missouri Western took a lead with two minutes left in the first half and did not let it go until Guske's 3-pointer. Missouri Western crashed the basket as time was dwindling and Colbert drew the foul to set himself up to hit the game-winning free throws. Augustana returns to action tomorrow afternoon taking on Central Missouri at the Pentagon in Sioux Falls. Tip-off for the Sanford Pentagon Basketball Showcase is set for 4 p.m.
