FARGO, N.D.—South Dakota softball’s Yvon Minogue and Morgan Hancock each hit one home run and accounted for all five of the Coyotes’ RBIs in a 7-5 loss to North Dakota State at Ellig Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon. The game was the regular season finale for the Coyotes (29-18, 12-7 SL), who will begin preparing for their first Summit League Championships appearance on Thursday against Fort Wayne.

It was the 13th time this season USD has had multiple home runs in one game and gave the team 44 homers for the year, seventh-most in Summit League single-season history.

Six different Coyotes had hits on the day. Hancock’s home run was her seventh on the season, second most on the team and sixth-most in the league, while Minogue’s homer was her sixth of the year. Katie Dinning doubled in the third, giving her at least one hit in all three games of the series. The ‘Yotes were able to score 10 runs in two games against NDSU ace Whitney Johnson, who has only allowed 54 runs all season in 188 1/3 innings of work and holds a 1.54 ERA.

Madison Frain (7-9) pitched the first 4 1/3 innings for the Coyotes, surrendering all seven runs on nine hits while striking out five. Missy Blackburn threw the final 1 2/3 of relief, allowing just one hit while walking none.

South Dakota fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first stanza but rallied to take its only lead of the game with a three-run third inning. Dinning’s two-out double advanced Kate Snow to third base and set up Minogue for her three-run bomb that put USD on top 3-1. The Bison responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the same inning to take a 5-3 advantage.

After NDSU (30-14, 17-1 SL) padded its lead with two more insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth, USD cut the deficit to two runs (7-5) again in the top of the sixth inning on Hancock’s two-run shot to left center field.

USD will be the three seed in the Summit League Championships, which will begin on Thursday. Game times will be announced on Monday.
