Larry Pressler joins the crowded South Dakota U-S Senate Race

Sioux Falls, SD (KELO) Former South Dakota Republican Senator Larry Pressler announced at a news conference in Sioux Falls Thursday that he will run for his old U-S Senate seat as an independent.

Pressler's hat joins an already crowded ring of candidates, one Democrat, four Republicans, for the retiring Tim Johnson's seat, one of the key national races that Republicans hope will help them regain control of the U-S Senate. Johnson beat Pressler for the seat in 1996.

the 71-year-old Pressler says one of the reasons he will run as an independent is because of what he calls the the partisan poisoned atmosphere in Washington. He pledges that if elected he will serve only one six year term.

He says one of the first things he would do if he gets back to Congress is seek an immediate withdrawal of U-S forces from Afganistan. He also wants to rein in the NSA.

Pressler now needs to mount a petition drive to get enough signatures to get on the 2014 ballot as an independent.
